Department of Community Medicine

Concept and Duties:
Community Medicine is a science  that deals with provision of health services to the community at large; besides studying of population demography; preventive and control aspect of communicable and non communicable diseases for the aim of health promotion. It deals also with research in the field of health problems in the community. Historical Background
Department of Community Medicine was established in 1927, the year of the establishment of Iraqi Royal College of Medicine. The first head of the department was British (Dr. Krigly) ; then after the responsibility of the head of the department was sponsored by the following Faculty Members:

                In the time being the head of the department is Dr. Saleh Jasim Alwan.
Duties:
During third and fourth stage under graduate study the department provides teaching services on the following topics; Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Nutrition, Occupational Medicine and Environmental Health, Family Medicine, Medical Sociology, Health Administration and Primary Health Care.

The department also provides degrees in post graduate study including Diplomas, MSc, and PhD in community medicine, and was accredit by the Iraqi Council for Medical Specialty as a center for training the postgraduate's students in Community and Family Medicine, and the faculty members of the department are responsible for teaching biostatistics & methodology for the postgraduate students in other Departments.

Objectives:
Teaching undergraduate medical students during their third and fourth stage including:
1. Provision of Knowledge of principles of Community Medicine.
2. Promote skills in General Epidemiology & methodology.
3. Training in biostatistics for the purpose of dealing with data presentation and interpretation and utilization of these information to identify ill effects and risk factors on human health for the ultimate purpose of prevention and control of health problems in the community.
4. Principles of conducting a research work.
5. Understanding the policies and strategies of health promotion.
6. Active participation in the process of graduation of efficient doctors to implement the national and international health promotion strategies and good candidates for postgraduate studies.
7. Providing teaching services to postgraduate studies including Diplomas, MSc, and PhD in community medicine. The above professional and academic degrees will make these graduates to be able to work in Ministry of Health, Ministry of Higher Education & Scientific Research and other Directorates. The criteria of acceptance in the postgraduate studies are complied with the criteria of acceptance according to the current regulations.
