Department of Internal medicine

The department was established in early thirties of the previous century with the establishment of the college of Medicine as a principal department for teaching internal medicine and its various specialities. The department was lead by a group of efficient professors who contributed greatly to the development of the department and the medical college. The head of department now is professor Suad Al-Windawy.

The department includes the following units:
         1.  Dialysis unit.
         2.  Cardiology unit.
         3.  Hematology unit.
         4.  Neurology unit.
         5.  Rheumatology unit.
         6.  Dermatology unit.
         7.  Psychiatry unit.
         8.  Dermatology unit.
         9.  Respiratory unit.

The department is teaching and training internal medicine to students of the following classes of the medical college:
      1. Third year class.
      2. Fourth year class.
      3. Fifth year class.
         4. Sixth year class.

The teaching includes theoretical lectures and clinical cessions in Baghdad Teaching Hospital. The materials included in teachings are:
         1.  Infectious diseases.
         2.  Fluid & electrolyte disorders.
         3.  Irnmunological diseases.
         4.  Respiratory diseases.
         5.  Cardiac diseases.
         6.  Gastrointestinal & hepatic diseases.
         7.  Endocrine diseases.
         8.  Renal diseases.
         9.  Blood diseases.
         10. Neurological diseases.
         11. Rheumatic diseases.
         12. Psychiatric diseases.

In addition, the department is teaching and training post-graduate students of internal medicine including the Iraqi Board, Arab Board, Diploma of interventional cardiology, Diploma of rheumatology, Diploma of respiratory disorders, in addition to supervising students of Master and Ph.D degrees in the basic sciences of the college.

In addition to the academic activities, the department offers medical services to patients of Baghdad Teaching Hospital in general medical wards and in the units of the department of medicine and offering medical consultations to other governmental establishments and participating in medical committees of in the ministry of health and other non governmental committees.
