The Pharmacology Department was founded 2 years after the Royal hospital college of medicine had opened.
Dr Staesy, the senior physician in the Royal hospital. who was responsible for ward 2 (female) and 9 (male) was asked to teach the subject (Materia  Madeca) to third year medical students according to the curriculum of Edenberagh university.
The Materia Medeca was composed of comprehensive studies of substances (drugs) which were used by doctors as medicines to treat patients as recorded in the British Pharmacopoca. The curriculum was taught in 60 hour theory and 30 hour practical (lab). The lab included  experiments of the effect of these substances (drugs) on animals.

These developments changed the subject from (Materia Madca) to (pharmacology) and composed comprehensive study of substances starting from preparations or extractions to the effective dose, its toxicity, its side effect, its mode of action, metabolism, exceretion, the action of these substances on the body, and its action.

Recent developments in the physiology and the internal environment open another page which explains the action of the drug quantity and quality differ from one subject to another, this makes the prediction of the action of drug is not absolutely as we used to know and the (clinical pharmacology) is the last part of studies of this subject .
